Bart J Bruno
Bart J. Bruno, an engineering school graduate from UC Berkeley, began his career with Guy F. Atkinson Company, a nationwide construction company. With Atkinson, he worked as a project manager primarily on large freeway projects up and down California. Bart later joined Piombo Corp which was headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, eventually becoming the company’s Chief Estimator. He bid their large projects including a $45M project in Dubai in 1975.
Having lived on the Monterey Peninsula as a child, Bart had always hoped to return. The opportunity arose in 1976 when Piombo was awarded a contract to build a complex sewage project. The project included a 27,000 foot pipeline that ran from Point Pinos in Pacific Grove to the sewage treatment plant in Monterey. Bart moved to Monterey to run the project. It was challenging because it went through extremely sensitive areas including a 2,700 foot section that was to be installed 16 feet below sea level on Del Monte Beach. The project and Bart’s management was highlighted in a 1978 article in California Builder & Engineer magazine entitled Ingenuity Solves “Sensitive” Sewer Project.
Not wanting to move from the peninsula, Bart founded Monterey Peninsula Engineering in 1980 as a general engineering construction company. Hard work, dedication, and attention to its clients’ needs paid dividends. Over the past 40 years, Monterey Peninsula Engineering has grown in both size and reputation. Bart mentored his sons Jim and Paul and his nephew Peter Taormina who joined him in the family business. Together, these three Principals bring over 100 years of experience to the table.
Bart resides with his wife in Pebble Beach. Having turned over the management of MPE to the next generation, he remains very active in the local community volunteering his skills and knowledge on various boards and commissions.
